Points table calculator
Enter results for up to eight teams and get a sorted table with points, net run rate or goal difference and the qualification places highlighted.
Sample teams and numbers are invented. Leave a team name blank to leave that row out.
How the cricket table is worked out
Each team's points are its wins, ties and no-results multiplied by the points your competition awards. The default is 2 for a win and 1 each for a tie or a no-result.
Points = (wins × win points) + (ties × tie points) + (no results × no-result points)
Teams on the same points are separated by a tie-break. Net run rate is the usual one:
NRR = (runs scored ÷ overs faced) − (runs conceded ÷ overs bowled)
Overs are counted in true overs, so 58.4 overs is 58 and four-sixths, or 58.667. If a team is bowled out, count its full quota of overs as faced. If a team wins a chase, count the overs it actually took.
How the football table is worked out
Points = (wins × 3) + (draws × 1)
Goal difference is goals for minus goals against. When teams are level on points, goal difference is the common first tie-break, then goals scored. Many competitions add further tests, such as results between the tied teams.
Worked football example
Using the default football rows: Team D has 2 wins and 1 draw, so 7 points, with 5 goals for and 1 against (+4). Team A has 1 win, 1 draw and 1 defeat, so 4 points, with 3 for and 2 against (+1). Team C has 3 draws, so 3 points, and Team B has 1 draw and 2 defeats, so 1 point.
Highlighting qualification places
Set the number of qualification places and the top rows are shaded. This shows which teams would go through if the table finished as it stands.
Limits
- The calculator does not know your competition's full tie-break list.
- It does not read fixtures, so it cannot say what teams need from their remaining matches.
- Check the regulations for how rain-affected or abandoned matches are treated.
Common questions
How does the calculator rank teams?
Points first. In cricket, teams level on points are then ranked by net run rate or by most wins, whichever you choose. In football they are ranked by goal difference, then goals scored.
Can I change the points for a win or a tie?
Yes. Cricket defaults to 2 for a win and 1 each for a tie or no result. Football defaults to 3 for a win and 1 for a draw. Change them to match your competition.
What overs format does it expect?
Overs as a scoreboard shows them. 58.4 is 58 overs and 4 balls. The digit after the dot can only be 0 to 5.
What overs should I enter when a team is bowled out?
Enter the full quota of overs, for example 20.0, not the overs actually batted. This is the usual net run rate rule, but check your competition's regulations.
Does the calculator know my competition's tie-break rules?
No. It applies the two common orders offered in the settings. Some competitions use head-to-head results or other tests, so check the regulations.
